Mixing and matching patterns makes an outfit so much more interesting and stylish, but it can be intimidating to try yourself. The key is identifying a shared characteristic between the garments. Check out the rules below and our examples, using Amber Patton clothing and Terracotta scarves, and you'll soon be on your way to being mis-matched...in the good way.
GEOMETRIC RULE (same shape, different colors)
Though the blue in the dress is a different shade, our Lulu Dress totally works with The Farrah Scarf because it utilizes different colors in combination with the same geometric shape in the fabric. Both have florals, so you could even change one of the elements to a pink or yellow as long as you maintain the floral pattern. The shape rule can apply to mixing and matching different color polka dots with each other or multiple stripe garments in one outfit, etc.
COLOR RULE (same color, different shapes)
This is the fun one. As long as the items have the same color you can mix and match any patterns together. Here we created a very dynamic and surprisingly sophisticated outfit with the June Tank and The Sidney Scarf. The floral and the stripes can work together because they share the yellow color.
